How it Works


Every year The Princess Project seeks and receives hundreds of beautiful dresses from individual donors, corporations and fundraisers.

After we receive all of the dresses and accessories, our wonderful volunteers organize them for our dress giveaway event.

During our dress giveaway, hundreds of teens from all over the Bay Area (sometimes even farther) come and find their perfect dress to make their prom dreams real!

Our Values

In addition to helping high school teens attend their prom with style and confidence, The Princess Project is driven by seven core values.

In everything we do, we strive to honor these values so that we can continue to provide the most fun and memorable experience for the teens we serve, volunteers that help, and our generous donors.


We strive to OFFER meaningful volunteer leadership opportunities for women, and seek to provide a venue for volunteers to grow personally and professionally.


We TRUST that teens who are in financial need of garments or accessories will attend The Princess Project events, and we will welcome them without question.


We strive to include the DIVERSITY of people represented in our communities and our volunteer corps


We CELEBRATE bodies of all sizes and avoid using body imagery in our marketing and outreach.


We VALUE the importance of recycling and of using the earth’s resources wisely.


We strive to INCLUDE representatives of teens that we serve in our decision-making processes.


We strive to CREATE a respectful, fun atmosphere for the teens we serve at the Dress Giveaway events.

Our Mission

The Princess Project promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by providing free prom dresses and accessories to high school teens who cannot otherwise afford them. Our effort is made possible through invaluable volunteer, donor, and community support.

By creating a positive environment that celebrates bodies of all shapes and sizes, our work goes far beyond the dress to instill a sense of pride and confidence in the thousands of teens that we reach each prom season across California. We reach teens at a pivotal moment in their lives and give them an experience that they will forever cherish, as we celebrate with them their passage into adulthood.

Our History

One teen, one dress and the rest is history. Started in 2002 by Laney Whitcanack and Kristi Smith Knutson, The Princess Project was inspired by one young woman in need of a dress to attend her prom. We have since grown to now proudly serve more than 35,000 deserving teens through our five chapters in San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Tracy and Los Angeles, our newest chapter that is hosting its first dress giveaways this spring.
